Yes, Prime Minister!!!

Our PM is emulating his predecessor in his threat to resign if the government is not allowed to have its way.. Well, history goes on to say that Vajpayee emerged stronger with that threat, but Manmohan Singh looks even weaker, going and complaining to Mama Sonia, rather than putting it across to the Congress Parliamentary Party or the Congress Working Comittee. And then, all the NDA constituents had fallen meekly in line, but this is seven years later, and the comrades are no ordinary allies.

Only time will tell what the fate of the N-deal will be, but for once, I feel that India is not bothered by the prospect of mid-term elections. Our democracy has considerably matured with all the coalition governments of the past decade, and the humble citizens know that whatever be the outcome, the prospects are bright. While this may seem overtly optimistic, I am considerably pleased by this, because, this to me is an implicit trust in the foundations of democracy.

The seeds of a compromise have been sown, and we should see the usual stuff being hashed out. We may see no action at all, which is a let down after the drama.

I'd rate the probability of the issue being forced at around 20%. Not too much, but just high enough not to ignore ..

Well, going by the developments, it seems quite likely to me that the MMS is ready to sacrifice his office at the altar of the deal that he believes in. Kudos to this man, who is standing up for national interest, like none before. This kind of reminds me of the Japanese PM Koizumi, and the 2005 election there..

If he does manage to get the deal through, courtesy Mulayam, the important fallout of this will include :
** This will be how he will go down in history. Every PM has a legacy, IG had '71 and Emergency, Rajiv had computers and Bofors, Vajpayee has N-tests and Lahore bus trip.. The N-deal will become the legacy of MMS.
** The charge of weakest PM ever will fall flat on its face, and the opposition will have to come up with a new marching point against the ruling alliance for the next LS elections.

I am not against holding snap-polls for the sake of the N-deal, for various reasons (some other time!!). But I want MMS to come out clean with the pros and cons of the deal, to the Indian public when the issue is being debated, such as now.

We have seen all the action after the drama, and the PM has emerged stronger, taller, and more powerful. He will have his legacy of reforms and N-deal, and is not the weakest PM ever.
