Old is not Gold!!

Under the Indian Constitution, every government employee must retire at 60. Without beating about the bush, I ask Why?? Who says that an employee becomes incapable of serving the country at 60.. Is there a scientific basis for this law?? I don't think so.. Look at this report, in particular the last two paras. Its stunning. While the average life expectancy since independence has gone up by almost 25 years, the retirement age has risen by just 2 years..

Now, its another matter if the employee wants to retire early, there is always the VRS.
Medical retirement also continues.. But for someone who wants to continue working, why not let them.. If they were fit at 59 yrs and 364 days, they definitely don't become incapacitated by aging a day!!! After all, in our country, a fifty-something is called a next-generation leader when it comes to politics.. Then why not the bureaucracy.. I personally think the retirement age should not be a fixed number, but pegged to the average life expectancy of the country. If we live longer, we work longer, simple..

Lastly, when we talk of Young India, and "Bharat Uday", we forget that India, by our own standards, would have been deemed fit to retire on 15th August, 2007, the day it turned sixty..

Nice topic man... 60 is only a limit the govt has set... doesn't necessarily mean that a person becomes inefficient thereafter... :)

Also my take is that the 60 is fine coz with majority of the population being less than 30 ,everyone needs a job :). The sharp increase in the number of ppl "employable" and the increase in "available jobs" never match at any point... Imagine if there was nothing called retirement.. u work till u die.. there would have been rampant unemployment in the youth... worse than the present.. ..
Be happy u have a job (assuming there wasn't this IT field and u had to look for a govt job) :)
Ur view then would have been different. :)

I know what you are pointing at.. And yes, if there was no IT, and I had to look for a govt job, my take would most likely have been different..

But then, IT field is there, no point in assuming otherwise.. Given that this field has a potential to generate loads of employment, and that everyone is facing an "employable people" crisis, this upper age limit on employment seems like a outright crazy idea..

The focus should not be entirely on jobs, the way it is today.. It should be on teaching people employable skills.. Its like, give a man a bread, and you have solved his hunger for a day.. You teach him farming/hunting, his hunger for life is looked after..

Agree with you Piyush. I think it should be left to the judgement of people to decide when to quit. Unless if the person is mentally ill or fails drastically to perform well in the work.
Age by no means decides anything , offlate. People who are young in age could suffer from problems which the older ppl wouldnt even hear of!
All credit to primitivism! The whole concept of government jobs seems like a grandpa's story to me!
