Good Ad, Bad Ad

Some of the recent advertisements have left me wondering where has all the creativity gone!!! The likes of the Hero Honda Hunk ad with the bulls and the latest Amul macho with a bunch of primates are in extremely bad taste, and I wonder why would anyone with even an iota of self-respect ever consider buying those products after seeing the ads.. At best, these ads insult the intelligence of the customers..

But all is not bad on the creative side, with the Idea Cellular ads starring Small B being my personal favorite.. The concept itself.. What an Idea!! Another great ad in my opinion was the T20 World Cup ad by Reliance Communications which said "Chote Match, Bade Sapne".. The Fevicol ads are also a delight to watch, whenever and wherever.. Kudos to the team that came up with these.. However, the most popular one of recent times is definitely the original Hutch ad with the pug.. An instant success..

The icing on the cake though is the Amul series of ads, ever since 1976, with the thumb sized moppet that "everyone loves to love".. I have literally grown up seeing these ads, and will cherish memories of them for a long long time.. Other memories from a childhood long long ago are the eternal "mile sur mera tumhara" and "ek chidiya, anek chidiya".. Classics, rather, Sholay of advertising.. Long live the creative brigade..

PS: I know I will have missed out a whole bunch of good (and bad) ads.. Please feel free to comment about your favorite ones..

Ads do not insult your intelligence, they're best watched when you've voluntarily relinquished your thinking-being status, especially while watching TV.

My "good" list
- "Kya swaad hai zindagi mein" series from Cadbury
- NECC's "meri jaan, murgi ke anDe"
- Asian Paints Apex ads in Malayalam - superbly localized.

My "bad list"
- The old Indian Railways ads. Remember "galti ki na? kaisa laga?" and "ham ise mazboot banaye, aur iska labh uthaye"
- BSNL FM radio ads. Trust a PSU to use words like "avail" in a radio ad!

More in the "bad list"

- Every fairness cream ad ever.
- Special mentions for the male variety which have recently popped up
- "Sehwag ki maa"
- Hmm, will we see a Symonds ki maa version? :)

Well said, but even after relinquishing your thinking-being status, some ads can still manage to insult.. Its just the level of creativity that has gone into them ;)

And the Cadbury ad was on my good list, but then I chose the Fevicol ad in place of that.. I really liked the one where the guy hits a six, and the girl comes dancing on the field..

However, I have not seen either of your bad list ads, so if you could pas me the youtube link..

Actually, PSUs do not always make bad ads.. I remember the SAIL ads, which were really good.. I think its just that some PSUs are not run by bozos, unlike the majority..

Yes.. sehwaag ki maa.. The most butt-of-all-jokes ad ever!!!

And well, symonds ki maa.. Well, hopefully we wont get there, but check this out!!!

Ads! I have SO many favs ..
- the Dhara ad where the kid says 'jalebi!.'
-the new airtel ad -'barriers break when people speak'
-cadbury's- the girl running into the ground after the six , the girl with mehendi on her hand trying to bite the chocolate
-all hutch ads - especially the recent ones where the guy waits in the lift an entire day after seeing the msg "you wil meet your soulmate in the elevator".. so cute ! And all the ones with the doggie
- the lux ad with aishwarya getting different tattoos!
-mountain dew :)
-kohinoor extra time --that ad puts a smile on my face everytime i see it ...its SO fun!

Piyush Sethia Thu Mar 13, 04:59:00 PM GMT+5:30

@ Indira :
- the Dhara ad : Ah yes, it was awesome..

-the new airtel ad : Somehow, seems really tacky to me

-all hutch ads - especially the recent ones where the guy waits in the lift an entire day after seeing the msg "you wil meet your soulmate in the elevator".. so cute ! : Yes, it was a good concept..

- the lux ad with aishwarya getting different tattoos : which one!! I have never seen an ad like that..

-kohinoor extra time --that ad puts a smile on my face everytime i see it ...its SO fun! : I do not remember the brand, but is it the one where the girl keeps biting the guy all along the bike ride?? That one was good..

One more in the good list : A recent ad for body deo (am bad at remembering brands), which features Durga Puja in Bengal, and the lady fantasizing after she crashes into the guy.. Like the concept..

Mukesh Ambani => Sehwag ki maa
Anil Ambani => Chote Match Bade Sapne

I think it's clean which half of Reliance is better at the ad business. :)

Hey that lux ad is one in which they show all varieties of lux. Aishwarya wears different clothes each time and gets a tattoo done in different places! It was a nice one, doesnt come these days though..
Hey and kohinoor extra time is one in which one lady sleeping outside a room will hear a lot of sound in the night . The next day when she goes to clean the room, she spots this condom cover lying there and sits on the cot and finds out how the sound had come the previous night ...Ahhh I am elaborating too much, but am sure you wont get the feel if you hvnt seen!! :)
And the girl biting the guy on the bike is "Moods" condom! Awesome ad that also..
And yes, that durga puja ad also rocked!

And I remember more stuff now! Remember the nerolac ads ? They all had nice songs..
ANd during PV Narasimha Rao's tenure, there used to be one song "anjaane raho mein tu kya door tak chale".. It was a nice song!

And one new surf excel ad where the kids start fighting to make their parents stop fighting.. That also looks gud!

And I somewhat like the nirma ads also..With the songs :P

AH, YOu got me started on ads!

Piyush Sethia Thu Mar 13, 11:49:00 PM GMT+5:30

@ Karthik, you know what, it seems to me that Ambani Jr is just good at making ads ;)

Piyush Sethia Fri Mar 14, 12:00:00 AM GMT+5:30

@ Indira, try and get the youtube link of the Ash-Lux ads.. Also for the Kohinoor and the PVN regime ad.. Dont recall seeing either of those..

Surf Excel, kids fighting?? Am clueless, but guess thats because I do not see too much TV these days, actually nothing but matches..

Another condom ad, this one is clearly the most creative of all, although I excluded it from the list since it is not Indian..

Also, another great ad from the yester years is the hamara bajaj ad.. And the coolest ad running currently is the mentos monkey-donkey ad.. Hats off to this team :)

The Mad Hatter Fri Mar 14, 09:30:00 AM GMT+5:30

Condom ads have an inherent advantage: they can only hint at their point. What is creatively hinted at is always more aesthetically pleasing than what is said. It's a lot harder to do that, but in this case they're forced to. If we become more permissive in what can be shown on TV, the first casualty would be the creative condom ads we have today. :)

Yes, I agree with mad hatter .. Condom ads have to be suggestive and still drive in the point :)
And Piyush, this is the link for aish- lux ad. But its not complete!

And the song I was telling you is sung by lucky ali and they say its part of some album :| But I remember seeing it as an ad in the tv ..

dont know if i was too young and stupid then to mistake an actual song for an ad :|

rakesh Mon Mar 17, 07:40:00 PM GMT+5:30

guys the best ads are on Radio!

Piyush Sethia Mon Mar 17, 11:58:00 PM GMT+5:30

@ Rakesh, not denying that.. Infact, I still remember some of the memorable ads/clips from my hostel year(5 years ago!!), when all the entertainment I had was a humble radio..

But then, for an apples to apples comparison, do comment on some of your favorite tv ads..

@ All, another of those ads that is worth to be in the mocking-your-intelligence-category is the SKC ad, with the tagline : clothes worth flaunting..

AjAy Wed Mar 19, 06:45:00 PM GMT+5:30

Some of the Ads that I liked very much :
Cadbury's "Papu pass ho gaya" with Big B. I simply loved them.

Virgin mobile ads, especially the one where, " DAD, MOM mujhe ladkon mein koi interest nahin hain" and also the police man calling PAPA!!

There was a PEPSI Ad, wherein a kid who is not tall enuf to reach the pepsi button in the vending machine. He presses the coke button twice and steps on them and presses the PEPSI button. That was too gud!!

Then there was an ad for seat belts, where the guy's soul tries to leave his body after an accident, but it could not as he wore a seat belt at the time of the accident..

The Ad where Vrajesh Hirjee says CONDOm instead of kabaddi is also too gud!

The list just goes on....
